What Month Is The Great Migration In Africa?

The Great Migration of wildebeest and other animals is one of Africa’s most stunning natural sights, making for an unforgettable safari in Tanzania or Kenya.

July to October is considered to be the ideal period to witness a river crossing when wildebeest are in the Northern Serengeti plains, and up to thousands can cross Mara River – one of Earth’s greatest wildlife spectacles!

What is the Great Migration in Serengeti?

Millions of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes traverse the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of green grasslands and water. Their journey is unpredictable due to seasonal changes and can last months at a time.

The Great Migration follows a circular path, with most wildebeest migrating north through Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Some herds stay in the southern Serengeti to give birth, while others move further north towards Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve.

In January, herds of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes graze on the short-grass plains south of Serengeti National Park. During calving season, mothers move quickly in search of favorable grasslands to give birth to their calves; it is also a time for predator interaction as lions and leopards venture into this area in pursuit of vulnerable young.

After the calving season ends in March, the herds move slowly west to the western region of central Serengeti. You’ll witness columns of cows stretching for kilometers around Moru Kopjes.

In April and May, herds of wildebeest begin their annual trek north across central and western Serengeti. As they traverse, they feed voraciously; however, by April, their food supply may begin to dwindle.

The Great Migration is often touted as the highlight of a safari, but it’s essential to keep in perspective that this is only one part of an expansive circuitous movement. Taking time out to appreciate other parts of Serengeti can be just as rewarding.

Best Time of Year to Visit the Serengeti Great Migration

Every year, millions of migratory wildebeest and zebras make their way from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve. This incredible wildlife spectacle can only occur once annually as these animals search for fresh grass and water sources – an experience not to be missed by visitors to Serengeti National Park.

For the best views of Serengeti National Park’s iconic parts of the Great Migration, mid-July to late September is ideal. During this period, you can witness migratory herds cross the Mara River in a dramatic synchronized movement.

On their migrations, one may spot predatory actions such as leopards, lions, and cheetahs, plus other large animals like African elephants, giraffes, cape buffaloes, and black rhinos.

Another major highlight of a Great Migration trip is witnessing river crossings where wildebeest, zebras, and other wildlife will cross the River Mara accompanied by crocodiles. These sights provide viewers with a humbling experience that will remain indelible memories.

If you’re on a budget, Serengeti National Park’s off-peak season from March to May and November to December is your best bet for an affordable safari experience. Not only is it less crowded during these months, but lodges and camps usually offer discounted rates as well.
